Home Water Related Tips
Drop In Water Preassure
Check the screens on your faucet and clean them. Water faucet
screens need to be cleaned about once a month depending on how
much the fixture is used
Cross Connections
When not in use, garden hoses should be disconnected from spigots
to provent back-siphonage, particulary in older homes that do
not have backflow preventers. It is a good idea to install backflow
preventers and vacuum breaks in plumbing for your safety if they
are not already present.
Check Your Water Meters
Inside water meters and outside recorders need to be checked every
year. This is particulary important when there is a recorder mounted
on the outside of your house. These recorders recive a pulse from
the inside meter to have a monthly reading. These recorders occasionally
malfunction and read less than they should or fail altogether
in which case the customer may receive a costly "catch up"
bill. This may be avoided by regularly reading the meters. they
should always read within 1,000 goallons of one another. If the
readings do not correspond please contact the office immediately.
Give your entire plumbing system a hearing test
Turn off your TV, radio, make sure everything is quiet and that
no water-consuming appliances or fixtures are running. Walk through
your kitchen, bath(s), and laundry room and listen carefully.
If there is a leak in your plumbing, you will hear the sound of
running water or drawing water. Also, check the small white triangle
on the face of your inside meter. If it is spinning when you are
not using water, you have a leak.
Banging Pipes
Banging pipes mean "high preasure" in your water lines.
A pressure regulator needs to be installed or if you already have
one, it may need service or replaced. Call your plumber for assistance.
At times the borough Public Works Crew may be working on the water
mains. This can cause air in your service lines and as a result
make your water look milky. Running your faucets for a few minutes
will clear up the appearance. Water hammer or panging pipes is
hard on appliances and water lines. It can lead to broken hoses
on your washing machine, can crack plastic valves on dishwasters
and cause hot water tank failure.
